WEARY OF O'LEARY, NEVER!

The week began with full-year results from Ryanair - the airline made pre-tax profits of EUR481 million in its last financial year. But it was chief executive Michael O'Leary's predictions for the next twelve months that grabbed most attention. O'Leary said Ryanair would do well to break even if oil prices continued to hover around the $130 a barrel mark, and he confirmed they would be grounding some of their planes in the off-peak winter months. Michael O'Leary speaks to John from the United States. And the full version of the interview is here to listen to..

NO PLACE LIKE HOME (WORKING)

For years, the term "working from home" has been a euphemism for pulling a sickie. It's also a way of including marginalised members of society in the economy. John went to the annual conference of the Contact Centre Management Association where the subject was discussed. EMPEROR DEVOID OF ANY PROTECTIVE GARMENTS

When was the last time you had a good 'brain dump'? How frequently do you achieve 'paradigm shift' or 'emotional resonance' when you 'drill down'? McCann Erickson's Dublin Group Account Director, Graham Nolan, asked in a recent article for Marketing Magazine whether buzz words actually hinder the communication and 'blue sky thinking' that they're meant to facilitate.

THE WINNING ENTRY BY KARL NOONE.
Petunia,

My beautiful parabola of love,

I wish to tender a paradigm shift,
a meeting of minds, that will make us step up to the plate
and look at the big picture.

I have given myself a swot analysis
and believe that my brand management
can do the heavy lifting, and with the killer app of your beauty,
we will reach a tipping point in our game plan.

Such an impulse priced, profit driven outlook will incentivise
and empower you to think of the synergies
that a quality driven merger may bring.

In short I believe it to be a no brainer
to optimise and put to bed our position.
I submit to you, that after crunching the numbers,
you should check with legal and realise like I that
it is a no brainer, a win-win
which should be taken off the backburner
before it falls down the slippery slope.

Once we have bedded down our partnership,
perhaps we will grow the business organically?

JOHN RYAN, RUNNER UP .

Dear Caroline,

Having undertaken in-depth research over seven consecutive quarters, being
impressed by your inherent attractiveness, and notwithstanding a recurring
tendency towards retail spending exuberance, I propose that a merger has a
compelling rationale at this critical phase of our respective lifecycles.
Such an amalgamation would result in a combined entity far greater than the
additive value of our parts, with expansion foreseen through of a number of
next generation spin-offs within a reasonable time horizon. I look forward
in eager anticipation to your positive response to this far from hostile
approach.

Love

John

BEST OF THE REST!

Aidan Cranny

My Dear Joan,

I want to touch base with you going forward to the scheduled romantic feast day. I thought I might run a little scenario up your flagpole that might potentially affect a salute from you. I have sensed a certain synergy between us. Despite the turbulent environment of the office you are in my thoughts 24/7. I am no longer proactive in the workplace. Whereas, before your arrival I was client focussed and service driven in my workflow management, I am now outside the box but not in a company-productive fashion. My mindset is not even in the ballpark anymore. I have no game plan I am , so to speak, out of the loop in-house.

The bottom line is, in order to increase my bandwidth and improve my core competency, I appeal to you to consider the paradigm of a strategic fit with me and let us revisit the success of the December festivities from the bottom up. I am accompanying this appeal with a sweetener (the flowers) and anticipate somewhat more than a sub-optimal return on investment within the timeframe that will put both of us in a win win situation,

Sincerely,

Tristram

Máire Murphy
Mission Statement

To secure an alliance that will future-proof our relationship and assure a 24/7 partnering with you going forward.

My beloved, at this juncture we have interfaced for many years and have done due diligence on each other's critical mass, so this is a heads-up that I'm seeking your buy-in to a value proposition that will leverage our core competencies and result in a win-win situation.
I touched base with a jeweller and secured this robust token of my commitment to you -- where the rubber meets the road. I hope it resonates with you and will incent you to move our relationship to the front burner and proceduralise it, hopefully in Q2.

Bottom line: If this roadmap is good to go, we can move forward ASAP to triangulate a wedding planner who has bandwidth in that timeframe, and develop a game plan to uptitle you.

Penny Storey

In light of current and predicted confidence in ongoing personal
interface performance indicators on multiple levels, and an
anticipation that an upscale in internal and external structures to
embrace flexible, future-proof and mono-visioned strategies would
create arable real estate with potential for eyeballing significant
planned and ad hoc expansionary policies, I hereby propose redrawing
the policy roadmap to consolidate ongoing asset exploitation and
streamline day-to-day operations going forward.

Carmel Lynch

This role involves the candidate reporting directly to the chief executive. The role involves the candidate following the project from inception, through installation supervision to final account. The candidate will be responsible for providing and maintaining solid financial support and emotional solutions to the chief executive. You will assist with the role-out of major family programmes - eg. child production, and be willing to follow the chief executives' approved complaints procedure. You must possess excellent qualitative skills and demonstrate a creative and inovative work ethic, however, with the ability to be influenced by and follow the chief executives' decision making process. The ability to maintain and promote good interagency relationships with the in-laws would be an advantage.
Previous experience in this demanding role is not a prerequisite.

You, my love, are the lucky candidate!!!!!

Aidan Beatty

I've been eyeing you up for a while now. I've run the rule over your tangible assets and I've looked at your bottom line, and I must say you compare very favourably with your peer-group. I don't mind telling you, I like what I see.
Oh I know what they say about me, that I'm only interested in the thrill of acquisition but that's all changed. I'm looking for a merger of equals now. I had one of my guys run the numbers on your past performance and you're a perfect strategic fit: a mature model perhaps but one with stable margins and undeniably well-leveraged.
Call me a mad romantic if you like, but I'm already thinking substantial interpersonal synergies and a positive return on emotional capital in year-one and who knows, maybe further expansion on a three-to-five-year horizon.
So, why don't my people talk to your people? This is a marriage that can pay dividends.
This is a preliminary offer only, subject to due diligence and mum's approval.

PRIMARY COLOURS
After the week of his life, John Delaney, CEO of online prediction market, Intrade, spoke to The Business. Intrade employs 18 people in Clondalkin and, since they went live in 2001, has become the world's leading online predictions market. Intrade's 70,000 members pit their wits against each other, effectively buying shares in the outcome of chosen events. In recent weeks, Intrade has taken in $50 million in trades on the US Presidential primaries, and the preferences of members are being treated as opinion polls by US media.

CONFORMING TO TYPE
From time to time, there are overnight success stories - and we've featured several on this programme. But, for most entrepreneurs, success takes time. if it comes at all. Nuala Macklin is a good example. Nine years ago, while recovering from a spine injury, she came up with a concept for an unusual keyboard. Unlike the traditional keyboard, Nuala's ergonomic keyboard would come in two parts - one for each hand - and could adapt to the posture of each user - whether standing, sitting or walking. It seems like a great idea, but nine years later, the breakthrough has yet to come. Alan Torney met up with Nuala and she described her struggle to get her keyboard concept developed. Nuala is actively seeking investment in her project.
