Radio 1 88-90fm

The Business takes an entertaining, offbeat and informative look at the world of business and finance. It gets under the skin of big business stories in a punchy and jargon-free way. As well as exploring the major issues and players of the day in the world of commerce, it also brings you the best from small and medium Irish companies around the country.
Landlords Leading The Way
"Landlords Leading The Way" is an initiative where we have called for landlords and property owners to give up their vacant spaces to start-up companies for free. We've had a great response. The list of available properties can be found here. If you have a vacant property, and if you want to give a start-up business a helping hand, please get in touch.

On this week's programme, presented by George Lee
Diamond in the Rough
John Teeling has been described as a maverick, a risk-taker and one of the best Irish whiskey makers around. He's been at the top of his game in the business world for over four decades. In the last two years alone, he's sold off three companies worth $200 million in total, the most famous being Cooley Distillery. And now, he's going back into the whiskey business with his son. He joins us in studio.
System D
Robert Neuwirth has spent the last four years hanging out with street hawkers and smugglers all around the world to learn about what we would call the 'black economy', or what he prefers to call ' System D'. He's just published a book on his travels called "The Stealth of Nations: The Global Rise of the Informal Economy".
Eurovisionless
While it's all about the Eurovision tonight in Azerbaijan, there's been more developments on the equally chaotic European economic stage. This week saw further slippage in the value of the Euro, and the Spanish banking giant Bankia pleaded for a massive bailout from the Spanish taxpayers. We're joined by Donal Donovan, former Deputy Director at the IMF, and by Ann Cahill, Europe correspondent for the Irish Examiner
The Crying Game
Anne Kreamer is a former Fortune 500 executive and Worldwide Creative Director for Nickleodeon. She's a big believer that showing your emotions and even crying in the workplace is a good thing and has written a book on the topic called "It's Always Personal : Emotion in the New Workplace". She joins us from Harvard, along with TCD psychologist John O'Keeffe, who is due to present a paper next week called "Bad Men in Good Jobs: The Psychopaths Amongst Us".
Getting Your Own Back on Business
Some Permanent TSB mortgage-holders were in the news this week lambasting management at the bank, over the very high interest rates that they are being charged. Facebook also had an embarrassing week with many of its small investors saying that they will sue over the way the company's launch on the stock market was handled, and Vita Cortex finally caved in to their former workers after a five month long strike. Suzanne Lynch from the Irish Times and Trish Morrissey, communications advisor, take a look at the numerous ways customers and staff can make sure their voices are heard.
