Listen Back: Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday

After the death of her mother, Mary Yellan is forced into a lonely journey across the bleak moors of Cornwall to a new home.

Jamaica Inn is the isolated hostelry run by her Aunt Patience and her aunt's husband, the much feared Joss Merlyn.

As Mary finds herself unwillingly drawn into her uncle's ongoing smuggling operation, she struggles with how to deal with the knowledge of Joss' crimes, and with her feelings for his estranged younger brother, Jem.

The reader is David Bickley.

'Jamaica Inn' is published by Virago, and The Book on One is produced by Aidan Stanley.
