    Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela - 18 July 1918-5 December 2013

A great man has died & needless to say Nelson Mandela looms large on our programme over the next hour.

His cause capitivated so many of us & we will hear some of the music & talk to people about his special qualities.

Extracts from Nelson Madela's speeches have been set to music many times, but only on one occasion did he agree to recording for music & that was for Irish musician, John Hughes who joins John on the line this morning.

Michael Harding - Irish Book Awards Winner / Also Invictus poem read by Morgan Freeman

Michael joins John on the line to talk about some of his memories of Nelson Mandela & how today is a good day to join Amnesty International.

Also actor Morgan Freeman reads the poem Invictus, which Nelson had on his cell wall.......Invictus by William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
    For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
    Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Concussion in Sport - Dr Barry O'Driscoll

The Heineken Cup kicks off again today & we are hoping for some epic battles, but one man who will be keeping a close eye on players is Dr Barry O'Driscoll, former advisor to the International Rugby Board & he joins John from a BBC studio in Manchester.

    More tributes to Nelson Mandela

We play a song by Dolores Keane... 'Lion in a Cage' that hold lyrics that speak about Nelson Mandela's imprisonment in South Africa. John also reads a quote from Nelson Mandela 'Tread softly, breathe peacefully, laugh hysterically'.
