    Music with Beoga

In studio with John we have music from Beoga. The bedrock of their sound lies firmly within the Irish tradition, however, they are not afraid to incorporate other genres’ nuances into their music. From bluesy riffs to a raunchy New Orleans jamboree vibe, their music always returns to a wonderfully bouncy Irish sound. The result is traditional, with a huge sense of fun & adventure.

Beoga will play Tradfest in Dublin's Temple Bar - the Button Factory on Saturday January 31st - for tickets go to www.templebartrad.com

    Listen

    American singer-songwriter Don McLean

John speaks to American folk rock singer-songwriter Don McLean. His signature song, 'American Pie' released on the American Pie album in 1971, was a number-one US hit for four weeks in 1972.

In the UK, the single reached No. 2 on its original 1972 release & a re-issue in 1991 reached No. 12.

    Listen

Folk & Country singer Brendan Shine

This morning Brendan Shine joins John in studio. His song 'O'Brien has no place to go' was his first hit song in 1971. It was to be only the first of the Athlone man's many successful records, topping the charts with no fewer than 45 singles, 5 of which reached the number No 1 spot & he has at least 40 albums to his name to boot!

The late, great Joe Dolan once famously said, 'Brendan Shine has more tracks than Irish Rail'.

Some you can remember 1980, may think it was the bleakest year in living memory, with crippling unemployment & little to cheer about. However 5 young lads from London were about to re-write chart music, transform pop culture & define a decade, these young lads were Spandau Ballet.  John caught up with them in Dublin last Friday.
