Preventing The Future - Why Was Ireland So Poor For So
Long?
From the mid-thirties through to 1960, Ireland was a
country that suffered from economic stagnation, as well
as cultural and psychological repression.  While
external circumstances account for much of the
stagnation - especially the depression of the thirties
and the Second World War - a new book argues that the
situation was aggravated by internal circumstances.
It's called Preventing The Future: Why Was Ireland So
Poor For So Long and it's by Tom Garvin, Professor of
Politics at UCD, who joins Tom to discuss his book.
Also in studio is Dr. Seán Barrett, lecturer from the
Department of History in Trinity College.

Preventing The Future: Why Ireland Was So Poor For So
Long is by Tom Garvin.  It will be published by Gill &
Macmillan (the ISBN code is 0717137716) on Sept. 1st.

How Would Jesus Vote In The US Election?
This is the provocative question that has been catching
headlines across the United States. It was first raised
at a recent conference of religious and lay leaders in
Texas.  The Rev. Timothy Tutt, pastor of United
Christian Church in Austin, has been involved in the
debate and joins Tom to look at the different points of
view that were raised.

Bees
Now what will you spend your retirement doing?  Playing
golf?  Doing a spot of gardening?  Well if you're
willing to take your life in your hands and want to
make a bit of money, you could do worse than bee-
keeping.  Our reporter Donal O'Herlihy talked to Philip
McCabe, President of the Federation Of Irish Beekeeping
Associations.

The Mystery Meath Men Uncovered: Pierce & Declan Fahy
When it comes to the Olympics, Ireland might have not
done very well in the medals tally, but nonetheless
when the races were won, it was two fellas in Meath
shirts that could be seen in almost every camera shot.
Summer Days tracked them down.

Peru
Whilst trekking through the Peruvian rainforest, Sean
Savoy from Reno, Nevada, came across an ancient city -
nothing unusual in that, except he was the first person
to visit the city in 1300 years.  He tells Tom is
extraordinary tale.
