Programme 1: 1st August 2006
Endangered Sounds.
David Attenborough's sound recordist, Chris Watson, captures the rare rattle of Deathwatch Beetle. Anthony Seeger reports on a recently reissued recording of North American Frogs, some of which are now on the endangered list. We hear another piece of endangered audio, the journey of late broadcaster, Joe Linnane, on board the last Howth tram in May 1959. The recordist on that historic occasion? Gay Byrne.

Sound and the Body
Luke talks to his father, Respiratory Consultant, Professor Luke Clancy, about the origins of the stethoscope. Composer Brent Michael Davids describes his condition of tinnitus, and his "Tinnitus Quartet". Author of The Human Voice, Anne Karpf, explains how sopranos "belting out arias at 110 decibels" might damage their own hearing - and reports on the activities of the Barbie Liberation Organisation.

Science Author Dava Sobel (author of the bestseller, Longitude) traces the connections between music, sound and the planets. Broadcaster Tim Lehane reviews that remarkable release, the Voyager Interstellar Record.

Sounds of the Tribe
Anthony Seeger describes his recordings of the Suyá Indians of Brazil. Mohican Composer Brent Michael Davids lampoons the author of The Last of the Mohicans. French Musician Cecile Schott a.k.a Colleen traces the connection between her recordings and Javanese Gamelan music.
