    Hello and welcome aboard this weeks edition of your maritime programme Seascapes this week we take a virtual tour around that RNLI Exhibition of Nigel Millard’s photographs in Grand Canal Square in Dublin that opened recently ; first this week on Seascapes we hear from Pat Tanner of The University of Southampton whom we spoke to some weeks ago at the Maritime Heritage Gathering in the National Maritime Museum of Ireland in Dun Laoghaire hosted by The Maritime Institute of Ireland – Pat Tanner enthralled the attendance with his presentation on new technologies and the restoration of traditional boats ......

       The return of Brazilian sailing legend Robert Scheidt to Laser competition after nine years in the Star class raised the stakes among the 2016 Olympic Games contenders at the Laser Standard Men’s World Championships organized and hosted by the Ministry of Sports Affairs and Oman Sail in Oman.....Congratulations to Robert who won the event......

    A cautionary tale from the album Won’t Be Long Now- Never Put to Sea Boys from Linda Thompson – written by Linda and John Doyle – reflecting her love of sea shanties , even though as she says in the liner notes Linda would get sick on a millpond ......

     

     

     

    A new book “ The Lifeboat – Courage on our Coasts” celebrates the work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution published by Conway and featuring the photography of Nigel Millard - The exhibition is located in Grand Canal Square beside the Marker Hotel and The Bord Gais Theatre – an area transformed – not to be missed .... you can see some of the images from the exhibition on the Seascapes webpage......we talked to a number of people with close connections to the work of the RNLI including Niamh Stephenson and Lucy Hampson first we hear from Aidan Reilly of Newcastle in Co Down who was en route to Poole in Dorset ......

     

     

     

     

    Next to the man himself a member of the crew of the Torbay Lifeboat and a distinguished professional photographer Nigel Millard told Seascapes about the origins of the exhibition and the book “The Lifeboat - Courage on our Coasts” ......

     

    Nigel Millard took Seascapes on an abridged walking tour of the exhibition in Grand Canal Square which will be in situ until next Monday 2nd of December ...

     

     

       We’ll have a signed copy by the author of “The Lifeboat - Courage on our Coasts” as a competition prize here on Seascapes in the next fortnight - this weekend Reindeer Runs are planned for Marlay Park – last weekend there was a similar event in Fota

    Wildlife Park.....RNLI lifeboats are busy all year round but some of their most challenging callouts occur over the winter months in complete darkness. This summer saw a 43 percent increase in the number of callouts RNLI lifeboats attended with Irish lifeboats launched 571 times.

     

    On Thursday next “Shaped for Ships – The Maritime Aspects of Cork’s Historic Development” is the subject of a lunchtime talk by Pat Ruane , Conservation Officer, Cork City Council – The talk takes place in Meitheal Mara on Crosses Green – time 12.45 for 1pm and the advice to those attending is to wrap up well ..../

     

     

     

    This week saw the launch of “Irish Shipping – A Fleet History “ in both Dublin and Cork we’ll be speaking to the authors of this long anticipated history next week ; also next week here on your maritime programme we feature The Fishmonger by Pat O Connell – the man who made Her Majesty the Queen laugh at a gurnard- we’ll have copies of The Fismonger published by The Liffey Press in our Seascapes competition ; plus Kieran Devaney on Flanders fields ................ all that and much more on Seascapes next Friday night , until then tight lines and fair sailing.”
