    Hello and welcome aboard this week’s edition of your maritime programme –on Seascapes this week Marcella Connolly talks to twins Johnny and Harry Durcan prior to their departure for the Optimist World Championships on Lake Garda in Italy ; we’ll have details of the Schools Regatta in Schull ; this weekend the CH Marine Glandore Classic Regatta gets into full swing celebrating the centenary of the Jolie Brise ; we have the winners of Mike Carney’s memoir of an islander – “ From the Great Blasket to America”; we talk to Ian Roberts from Lough Derg Yacht Club as they prepare for the Mirror World Championships in Dromineer ................ last weekend the biennial Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta took place in Dublin Bay – in superb weather but at times light airs ..................it was a colourful spectacle ranging from the DMYC to Royal Irish to Dublin Bay Sailing Club to The National and at the Royal St George Yacht Club where Seascapes spoke to Managing Director of Volvo Ireland – Adrian Yeates........

    Staying at the Royal St George Yacht Club – as the club celebrates its 175th Anniversary Seascapes spoke to the Commodore Liam O Rourke about the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta and the clubs auspicious anniversary.....

    Next Friday night here on Seascapes we’ll be hearing from Claudine Murphy whom we met in Dun Laoghaire at the Regatta plus friends of Seascapes – Rosemary Dawson; Pat Kelly ; Pearce Purcell; Yvonne Gordon and Stephen Wynne of the RNLI ; we also met up with Steve Hayes from Bray who told us that Bray Sailing Club are holding their inaugural Ladies Race on September 7th in conjunction with the ISA’s Women On the Water (WOW) and the Pink Ribbon fund. They are insisting that a lady helms for the duration of the race and are encouraging as many ladies as possible to take part. The guys are being encouraged to dress up for the day too, but they say that an actual lady has to helm. They are asking €10 per lady covering all
    categories of said ladies and they hope
    to raise as much as possible for this worthy cause........

    We are off to the inland waterways next on Seascapes and to Lough Derg Yacht Club where we met up with Ian Roberts to hear about the Mirror World Championships which the club is hosting next weekend ....

    Following on the success of a revised format last year , the Fastnet International Schools’ Regatta will again be hosted by the Fastnet Marine & Outdoor Education Centre and Schull Community College this summer. The event takes place in Schull Harbour from Monday next until Thursday and has attracted entries from the USA, Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

    The change in format provided fleet racing of the highest calibre in the Gold Fleet, where 24 identical dinghies provided the closest possible racing with the final result only being decided on the final day. The Gold Fleet boats are provided by the organisers which will permit sailors compete at the West Cork venue without the burden of transporting boats and allow the full enjoyment and competition to be the full focus of the week. Our thanks to Tim O Connor we wish them fair winds for the week ahead......

    Royal Cork Yacht Club members Harry & Johnny Durcan are no strangers to competition. Johnny represented Ireland at the French Nationals last year, while his brother Harry travelled to the Dominican Republic to take part in the Optimist Worlds.

    Marcella Connolly spoke to the twins at their home in Crosshaven for Seascapes ahead of this years Optimist Worlds Competition at Lake Garda, where both brothers qualified to represent Ireland in Italy. They talked to Marcella about their training regime , what it's like to sail against your twin and plans for the future........

    This weekend the CH Marine 11th Glandore Classic Regatta takes place in West Cork in Glandore Harbour. Among the startling line up of classics for the regatta the Jolie Brise is the most outstanding yacht, she is visiting the regatta as part of her 100th anniversary celebrations, winner of the first Fastnet race she will be making a reprise Fastnet rounding as part of the Regatta.

    Other well known entries this year include the Fife Solway Maid she returns for her fourth regatta last visiting in 2001. The Fife one designs of the Menai straits are also entered for this year these are really lovely boats and they are bringing a newl built Fife for her first outing.

    Oar and Sail are also set to feature . There are three Bantry long boats registered for the regatta Fionnbarra , Unitay and Integritay

    The Regatta opens Saturday with official opening in the Evening, The Parade of Sail will be on Sunday afternoon and there will be fireworks on the village on Sunday night, there will be a full sailing programme throughout the week, including the Fastnet event. Closing and Prizegiving will be on Friday evening July 26th.
