    Irish Travellers may have moved a step closer to being recognised as a distinct ethnic group if a draft report on Traveller ethnicity brought forward by Sinn Fein’s Pádráig Mac Lochlainn, is approved by members of the Oireachtas Justice Committee next month. I’m joined from our Cork studio by our reporter Brian O’Connell who has been meeting a group of Traveller women from Cork and Kerry and hearing some of their thoughts and experiences.

    Yesterday we heard about the conditions in the Spring Lane Halting site where about 150 travellers including many children are living – we heard about raw sewage, subsidence, overcrowding and very poor sanitary facilities Today in an effort to find out why nothing has been done about these conditions Keelin was  joined by Counsellor Ken O’Flynn from Cork City Council and by Louise Harrington from the Cork Traveller women’s network

    Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is to proceed with the development of 11 sites to provide 48 units of Traveller accommodation. There are currenly 78 Traveller families in permanent accommodation in the area with a further 36 families waitng to be housed. Paddy O'Gorman has been meeting some of those Traveller families
