The work of a new Zealand psychologist Professor David Fergusson has been widely quoted by those concerned about the Governments proposed legislation for women who are suicidal. However he said it would be “misleading” and for his studies to form the basis of any argument against allowing suicidal women have an abortion. In an interview in the Sunday Business Post he said he had not studied women who were suicidal and seeking an abortion, that his findings in relation to abortion and mental health were instead based on general population samples –an important distinction, he said.
