    The Irish and World War One This August will mark the centenary of the start of World War One. We will be commemorating this anniversary on The History Show with special programmes and short items telling the stories of Irish people who were involved in the war.     The Kalem Film Company

    Between 1910 and 1915, the Kalem Company made almost thirty films here dealing with, among other things, Irish history and emigration. They made history by producing not only the earliest series of fiction films made in Ireland, but also the first films to be shot on both sides of the Atlantic. Led by director and actor Sidney Olcott and daring leading lady Gene Gauntier, the Kalems first came here in the summer of 1910.
