    In speaking to Joanne and Alex Featherstone yesterday about the death of their partner and dad by suicide, we touched upon the proposal by Tanaiste Joan Burton to create a short form death cert that would omit the word ‘suicide’ from that official document. We’re returning to this proposal, and Keelin was joined in studio by Joan Freeman, the founder of Pieta House...and on the phone is Terence Casey, the Coroner for South Kerry.

    Three and a half years ago, Andy Morgan, a young father from Santry in Dublin left a New Year’s Eve party, went home and took his own life – leaving his partner and three children behind. Andy’s second daughter, Alex, who is now ten years old, has become something of an internet sensation in the last few days, after a video she made about her dad and how he died went viral. Alex, and her mum – Andy’s partner, Joanne Featherstone – joined Keelin in studio this morning.

    Since 1990 the has been a four-fold increase in the number of deaths by suicide and is the most common cause of death among our young people. Talking about suicide does not make it happen, but suppressing the conversation may do.One film, launched in January   and called “Finding Mike” was released by one young man experiencing suicidal thoughts and tells a remarkable story of hope and compassion. It has gone viral around the world. Sean was joined by Jim Lucey, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College, University of Dublin and Medical Director at St Patricks Mental Health Services.

    Around 500 people die by suicide in Ireland each year, according to the latest statistics available. That number has doubled since the 1980s. Suicide campaigners compare the suicide crisis to the issue of road deaths, which have been greatly reduced in recent years.     A cluster of suicides in East Galway has shocked the communities in towns and villages in a scattered rural area surrounding Ballinasloe. St Brigid's Psychiatric hospital has already closed and the town will lose five of its remaining twenty psychiatric beds next Monday, sending patients to Galway City instead.     Alcohol Action Ireland will hold their annual conference, ‘The Fear’: Alcohol and Mental Health in Ireland’ today. It will hear fromexpert speakers discuss how alcohol is impacting on mental health in Ireland. A recent study of suicide in Ireland found that half of those who took their own lives had abused alcohol in the previous 12 months. Alcohol-related disorders accounted for 1 in 10 first admissions to Irish psychiatric hospitals in 2011. Joining Sean were two people who will be speaking at the conference.     In Spring of this year, a Kerry teenager came to national prominence because of an article he had written for Kerry's Eye, asking his peers to consider any path other than suicide. Donal Walsh was 16 years old & was suffering from terminal cancer. Donal's outspoken appeal to vulnerable young people to say no to suicide inspired the nation. Last Friday Miriam met Donal Walsh’s parents Elma and Fionnbarr in their home in Blennerville, just outside Tralee. Since his passing, anonymous visits to his grave have been made by friends and strangers alike to pay their respects to him.
