Savita Halapannavar Death Fallout

Pressure is mounting on the government today following confirmation from Praveen Halapannavar that he will in no way co-operate with the HSE’s inquiry into his wife Savita’s death. Thirty one year old Mrs Halappanavar died at Galway University Hospital last month following a miscarriage. Her husband Praveen has said that his wife repeatedly requested a termination when she was told her pregnancy was no longer viable. On last night’s Six One news on RTE Mr Halapannavar’s solicitor Gerard O’Donnell suggested his client could take legal action to prevent the inquiry having access to his wife’s medical records. Death of a Pregnant Woman at University Hospital Galwy.

Two investigations are currently underway into the death of a woman at University College Galway who was 17 weeks pregnant. Savita Halappanavar was found to be miscarrying when she presented at the hospital but died a week later from septicaemia. Her husband has told this morning’s Irish Times that Savita asked for a termination to be carried out over a three day period after she was admitted but, he said, this was refused. Savita Halappanavar Inquest

Monday 8th April

The inquest into the death of Savita Halappanavar resumed in Galway to establish how the 31-year-old dentist from India died at University Hospital Galway on October 21 last. Simon Mills is a barrister and qualified doctor and he joined Pat on the line.
