Yesterday, the Expert Group on Repossessions, recommended a change in court rules to help make repossession cases more efficient after the Troika expressed concern at the low levels of repossessions here given the extent of the mortgage arrears crisis. Repossession and evictions invoke strong emotional responses in Ireland. But how is it dealt with in Ireland compared to the rest of Europe? Dr Padraic Kenna of the School of Law, NUI Galway will lead a major €1m EU-funded research project on evictions across the 28 European Union (EU) Member States. The research will investigate the national legal frameworks and extent ...http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2014/0115/497957-today-with-sean-o-rourke-wednesday-15-january-2014/?clipid=1394746
While some high profile builders and business people have left the country to avail of bankruptcy arrangements in the UK and elsewhere there is no escape for tens of thousands of Irish people who are being chased for what they owe the banks. Many of them are under water as a result mortgage debt. The latest figures show that nearly 98,000 private residential mortgages were in arrears for over 90 days by the end of June – more than 200 homes were repossessed by the banks. As it happens this afternoon (Tues) the Oireachtas Finance Committee will meet AIB chief ...http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2013/0903/471889-today-with-sean-o-rourke-tuesday-3-september-2013/?clipid=1301720
Stricken mortgage holders should avail of Insolvency Legislation as an act of personal recovery. Off the back of this banks are targeting stricken mortgage holders with equity in their homes for repossessions and giving debt deals to those whose houses are worth less than the mortgage they owe. In other words they are only trying to repossess houses that are worth something. On Friday we had a text we had from an anxious homeowner just after our interview with Finance Minister Michael Noonan (who was in to talk to us about the ECB deal) and it sums up the frustration of some burdened with home loan arrears “I am dealing with the Bank who are very difficult and loading (on) legal fees. Talking does not work. Will the Minister help me with the Bank and their heavy handedness”? And the plight of those affected by mortgage debt was highlighted in stark terms by the Governor the Central Bank Patrick Honahan. Pat was ...http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-pat-kenny/programmes/2013/0211/367172-today-with-pat-kenny-monday-11th-february-2013/?clipid=997120
