There has been a huge outpouring of sympathy for the family of 31 year old Savita Halappanaar who died of septicaemia at Galway University Hospital last month. Mrs Halappanaar who was 17 weeks pregnant presented with severe back pain and was found to be miscarrying. Her husband has claimed that Mrs Halappanaar had repeatedly asked for an abortion when she was told that the pregnancy was no longer viable. We now know that the Government is to introduce legislation supported by regulation to deal with the abortion issue on foot of the X case ruling. It follows the public outcry following the death of 31 year old Savita Halappanavar who died back in October following a miscarriage at Galway University Hospital. The legislation is expected to be framed by April of next year. Already the Catholic Church is out of the traps calling for a free vote on the legislation which would allow TDs to vote without the party whip and on their own beliefs. Joining Pat in studio ...
A growing number of Fine Gael TD’s are voicing concern about proposed abortion legislation, putting Taoiseach Enda Kenny under pressure ahead of tomorrow’s cabinet meeting. He asked critics to wait until the draft law is published before they respond. Former Taoiseach John Bruton said in the Irish Independent today that “the notion that a simple threat of suicide would make right something that would otherwise be wrong is a really dangerous principle”.
