    Two of the biggest beasts in British politics roared their way into next year’s general election campaign yesterday.  London Mayor Boris Johnson announced he’s applying to be the conservative candidate in a safe Tory seat in West London. While UKIP leader, Nigel Farage was selected to run for his party in Kent. Quentin Peel, formerly of the Financial Times in Germany and now with Chatham House in London spoke to Sean.

    Well  despite last week’s historic victory for the German football team in Rio de Janeiro, the feelgood factor clearly hasn’t influenced Angela Merkel too much to heart as – according to some reports – she does not intend to finish her term as German Chancellor. Sean was joined by Quentin Peel, Fellow at Chatham House in London.

    He has covered major world changing events over the past 30 years as a Foreign Correspondent for the Financial Times . He was in Moscow in 1988 to cover the Gorbachev revolution, and in 1991 he covered the German reunification from Bonn before moving to Berlin to cover matters financial and political there.   He has a strong attachment to Ireland and has often been on our programmeover the last few years giving his thoughts on our economic crisis.   Sean spoke to Quentin Peel, who's about to say good bye to Berlin having completed his second tour of duty there.

    Well it’s another term for Angela Merkel as her Christian Democrats stormed to their best result in 20 years, winning 311 of the Bundestag 630 seats in yesterday’s German election.
