    The Irish and World War One This August will mark the centenary of the start of World War One. We will be commemorating this anniversary on The History Show with special programmes and short items telling the stories of Irish people who were involved in the war.     Barry Edward O’Meara was born in 1783 in Newtown-on-Sea (now Blackrock) in County Dublin. O’Meara studied medicine at Trinity College, Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. In 1804 he joined the 62nd Regiment of Foot as assistant surgeon; in 1805 his regiment was ordered to the Mediterranean to join the Napoleonic Wars. In July 1815, O’Meara was senior surgeon on the HMS Bellerophon when Napoleon surrendered at La Rochelle. Napoleon was impressed with O’Meara, who spoke both French and Italian.
