    Behind every great politician or political party is, generally, a newspaper. But when Charles Stewart Parnell came to prominence as leader of the Irish Party in the House of Commons in 1880 he didn’t have the solid backing of a newspaper, so he set about correcting that deficiency. The result was the creation of the Land League newspaper United Ireland in 1881. For much of its existence, it was subjected to the close attentions of the British establishment in Ireland, and Dublin Castle often tried to censor the newspaper.
