The Garda whistleblower Sgt. Maurice McCabe is denying that the Garda Commissioner wrote to him with an order to co-operate with a Garda investigation into the cancellation of penalty points. And he hit back at media reports quoting Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan as “gravely misleading and false”. In a statement ,which puts him directly at odds with Commissioner Callinan, Sgt.McCabe said “ I was never directed by the Commissioner to co-operate with the investigation as alleged”. Joining Sean was Michael Clifford of the Irish Examinerhttp://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2014/0225/506492-today-with-sean-o-rourke-tuesday-25-february-2014/?clipid=1425811
Well it was the week when the Dail reconvened after its Christmas and New Year break, and if TDs thought January might be a quiet month, they were met instead with a deluge of controversy over money spent at Irish Water, and the startling revelations that emerged at the Public Accounts Committee yesterday. Here to discuss these stories and others that caught our attention during the week were Niamh Lyons, Political Correspondent with The Irish Daily Mail; Conor Pope, Consumer Affairs Correspondent with the Irish Times; Michael Clifford, Columnist with The Irish Examiner and Lise Hand of The Irish Independent.http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2014/0117/498460-today-with-sean-o-rourke-friday-17-january-2014/?clipid=1396548
Well in the week gone by, we exited the bailout and bid farewell to the troika...it rained for most of the midterm break, but the well ran dry in Dublin. There was more news of property prices rising in the capital, but we still await a confirmation of a referendum on same sex marriage. For discussion and debate on all of these topics, Sean was joined in studio now by columnist, Michael Clifford; Political Editor with the Sunday Independent, John Drennan and Terry Prone of the Communications Clinic.http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2013/1101/483990-today-with-sean-o-rourke-friday-1-november-2013/?clipid=1345925
There is an extraordinary case outlined in today’s Irish Examiner by Michael Clifford, it involves a Limerick drugs gang, a post office robbery and an arrest and a conviction that went very wrong for the garda informer at the centre of the story. Pat was by Michael Clifford of the Irish Examiner.http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-pat-kenny/programmes/2013/0610/455680-today-with-pat-kenny-monday-10-june-2013/?clipid=1237047
The recent Garda report into the quashing of penalty points found no evidence of Garda corruption . The investigation found that some gardaí were too “liberal” in complying with requests to terminate points and did not follow procedures when doing so. Some now face disciplinary action. Michael Clifford of the Irish Examiner has been taking a close look at some of the cases and concludes that the Garda report failed to highlight several serious issues that “point to a very different culture to what is portrayed in the official report”.http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-pat-kenny/programmes/2013/0527/452910-today-with-pat-kenny-monday-27-may-2013/?clipid=1225376
