This October, there will be a synod of 150 Bishops in Rome to review the Catholic Church’s teaching on family life. Yesterday, former president Mary McAleese described this plan by Pope Francis as ‘bonkers’ and that there was ‘just something profoundly wrong and skewed’ that male celibates should be involved in such a discussion. Joining Sean was David Quinn of the Iona Institute and columnist for the Irish Independent and theologian Gina Menzies whose name, along with that of the former president, was submitted to the Vatican as possible advisors for a synod in 2015 for Irish group We Are Church.http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2014/0617/624394-today-with-sean-o-rourke-tuesday-17-june-2014/?clipid=1603651
Last week former President Mary McAleese criticised the Catholic Church’s stance on gay people. The former President also stated in her opinion “within the priesthood a very large number of priests are gay.” In the public debate that has surrounded her comments, one voice that has been largely absent was that of current gay clergy who remain in the priesthood. In recent days, Brian O’Connell has spoken to a number of gay clerics and asked their reaction to President’s McAleese’s comments and talked to them about what it is like to be gay and a member of the clergyhttp://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2014/0115/497957-today-with-sean-o-rourke-wednesday-15-january-2014/?clipid=1394748
