Since its inception Irish Water has been enmeshed in controversy – on this programme managing director of Irish Water John Tierney revealed that more than €50 million had been spent on consultants’ fees which created a political furore. Yesterday, Mr Tierney made his second appearance before a Dail committee where he said that €10 billion will be required to update the system. It’s still only January and if this month is anything to go by the establishment of Irish Water is going to be one of the big political stories of 2014. Another day, another Dail committee but the same controversy rumbles on for Irish Water. Today, executives from the company will be joined at the public accounts committee by representatives from the commission for energy regulation and the Department of the Environment. They’ll face questions from politicians on how money is spent at Irish Water , on who knew about the 50 million paid out so far in consultancy fees and on the company’s procurement process. Later today senior management in Irish Water will appear before the Oireachtas Environment Committee to explain how it spent €50 million on consultants as revealed on this programme by Chief Executive John Tierney. So far €100 million has been spent setting up the company.
