    Centenary of Irish Volunteers and Irish Citizen Army

    One hundred years ago this week, on 19 November 1913, the Irish Citizen Army was launched to defend locked out workers in clashes with the police.  A week later, on the 25th of November, another military organisation, the Irish Volunteers was formed to safeguard the granting of Home Rule. The Ulster Volunteers had been formed the previous January to oppose it.
