    After increases in prices last October and again in January, health insurance members can look forward to another round of hikes which have just been announced. VHI are increasing their rates by up to 8.5%, Laya by as much as 16.4% and Aviva up to 6.4%. But, according to my next guest, there are still options out there for consumers looking to reduce costs.     It’s been claimed by a senior consultant that private health insurance premiums are climbing rapidly because the VHI and other insurance companies are paying the costs of private patients in public hospitals. Professor Michael O’Keefe, a consultant ophthalmologist at the Mater Hospital, says it is a “scandal” that the private patients are funding the public system when many of them have to lie on trollies and chairs in mixed wards. Professor Michael O’Keefe spoke to Pat this morning and John O'Dwyer, the CEO of the VHI.
