Loneliness is something we might tend to associate with those who are elderly and living in a rural part of the country, but it is in fact a feeling experienced by young and old – and its effects on mental and physical health can be devastating. Sean spoke with with Ann Sheridan, Mental Health Promotion Officer with the HSE in Donegal about how they are trying to address loneliness in the North West. In studio he was joined by Ann Dempsey of the Third Age group which runs the Senior Helpline; Marie Claire McAleer, Senior Research and Policy Officer with ...http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2014/0716/631114-today-with-sean-o-rourke-wednesday-16-july-2014/?clipid=1630583
Those working in our health service have for many years warned of a potential ‘brain drain’ as our doctors at every level – from GP to consultant – leave this country in favour of better pay and conditions abroad. Keelin was joined by three medics working within the health service for their analysis of how serious the staffing crisis within the HSE now is – Dr Ciara Kelly, a GP from Greystones, County Wicklow; Chris Luke, Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Cork University Hospital and the Mercy University Hospital and Michael O’Keeffe, Consultant Eye Surgeon at the Mater and Temple ...http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2014/0624/626077-today-with-sean-o-rourke-tuesday-24-june-2014/?clipid=1610895
Later today the HSE will be hosting what it terms as a masterclass for senior managers at the Convention Centre in Dublin. In a system where there has been a 25% reduction in spend, and a 12.5% reduction in staffing since 2008, the question will be how can the drive to reduce costs be reconciled with maintaining an efficient and quality level of care. The keynote speaker is Professor Robert S. Kaplan, Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development, Emeritus at the Harvard Business School.http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2014/0516/617751-today-with-sean-o-rourke-friday-16-may-2014/?clipid=1577630
The Central Remedial Clinic has suffered for the controversies that emerged over its use of charitable funds to boost salaries of its executives. The Clinic has been in the hands of the HSE since late last year – but a new board of governors has now been appointed to help rebuild the reputation of the troubled charity. Kieran Timmins is the new Chairman of the Board and he joins me in studio now.http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2014/0509/616205-today-with-sean-o-rourke-friday-9-may-2014/?clipid=1572238
A cabinet row is on the cards after it emerged that the Health budget may be more than €200m higher than the government planned for. The HSE says that cuts it has been asked to make are ‘unrealisable.’ Minister for Public Expenditure Brendan Howlin says he still expects the savings to be made. Martin Wall broke the story in the Irish Times at the weekend.http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2014/0414/608750-today-with-sean-o-rourke-monday-14-april-2014/?clipid=1533865
It has long been identified that reform of our health service is required, with trolley counts, waiting lists and indeed investigative programmes on our ambulance service all pointing to a system that is need of healing. A conference taking place in Dublin this week will bring together some of the most powerful figures in our health service to discuss the way forward...amongst them was Dr Tony O’Brien who is Director General of the Health Service Executive.http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2014/0331/605622-today-with-sean-o-rourke-monday-31-march-2014/?clipid=1521960
Figures just out show that some hospitals are much more likely to carry out Caesarian sections than others. According to the HSE statistics for 2012, over 40% of women in St Luke’s Hospital Kilkenny had a C-Section. This compares to just 23% in Sligo General. The figures were obtained by a group which campaigns for reform of maternity services in Ireland. Krysia Lynch, Co-Chair of the Association for Improvements in the Maternity Services spoke to Sean this morning.http://www.rte.ie/radio1/today-with-sean-o-rourke/programmes/2014/0327/604854-today-with-sean-o-rourke-thursday-27-march-2014/?clipid=1519107
