    Health Budget

    A cabinet row is on the cards after it emerged that the Health budget may be more than €200m higher than the government planned for. The HSE says that cuts it has been asked to make are ‘unrealisable.’ Minister for Public Expenditure Brendan Howlin says he still expects the savings to be made. Martin Wall broke the story in the Irish Times at the weekend.

A conference taking place in Dublin this week will bring together some of the most powerful figures in our health service to discuss the way forward...amongst them was Dr Tony O’Brien who is Director General of the Health Service Executive.

    Figures just out show that some hospitals are much more likely to carry out Caesarian sections than others. According to the HSE statistics for 2012, over 40% of women in St Luke’s Hospital Kilkenny had a C-Section. This compares to just 23% in Sligo General. The figures were obtained by a group which campaigns for reform of maternity services in Ireland. Krysia Lynch, Co-Chair of the Association for Improvements in the Maternity Services spoke to Sean this morning.

    Ruby McCandless -v- HSE

    In March 2006 Ruby McCandless was born by emergency caesarean section at Letterkenny hospital. She was left brain damaged after a failure to diagnose a serious medical condition in her mother prior to birth. Yesterday the High Court approved an interim settlement of €1.4 million against the HSE. Damien Tansey the solicitor for the McCandless family now joins me in studio.

    Ballinasloe Psychiatric Services

    A row has broken out in Ballinasloe in Co Galway over the HSE’s decision to close down the psychiatric services in the town, forcing patients to travel to Roscommon for treatment. Last Friday afternoon, the latest in a series of protest marches took place in Ballinasloe and now Dr Margaret O’Grady – Consultant Psychiatrist and Acting Clinical Director of East Galway Mental Health Services – has decided to go public to voice her opposition to the HSE’s plans.

    There were gasps of amazement in the Public Accounts Committee room yesterday when it was revealed that Paul Kiely the former CEO of the Central Remedial Clinic had a pension pot amounting to an astonishing €742,000 euro. The complex layers were peeled back in a letter read by the HSE’s Barry O’Brien to reveal the true extent of Mr.Kiely’s retirement package – before Christmas the committee had been told he got €200,000 tax free lump.
