    Stray Dogs

    Last year four and a half thousand dogs were destroyed in Ireland, that’s twelve dogs a day. And more than 17,000 dogs were abandoned or given up by their owners. Last night a British dog rescue charity brought thirty five dogs to the UK for re-homing in what has become a regular rescue gateway for Ireland’s unwanted animals. And almost all of those dogs came from traveller halting sites. Valerie Cox has been following the trail.

    There seems to be an upsurge in the theft of dogs in recent months… In one particular case two much loved lurcher dogs, Jodie and Erin which were stolen from a boarding kennel in Kildare in May. Their owners were heartbroken, but with a very impressive campaign using celebrities, social networks and a lot of hard work, both dogs were successfully retrieved – separately – six weeks later.     Controlling dogs

    Tom Brennan who is an ex dog warden rang in relation to dogs killing 46 lambing ewes on a farm in Roscommon last weekend. He believes there is no proper enforcement of the control of dogs act. He says everybody when they buy a dog should have public liability for it.....all dogs needs to be on leads and shouldn’t be let out to run wild. Irish people he believes are very negligent about their dogs.
