    In 2012, there were 682 confirmed executions recorded in 21 countries worldwide, according to Amnesty International. 43 of those were in the US. My next guest has been studying last statements from death row in Texas for the past 10 years in an effort to understand better the psychological state of prisoners immediately prior to execution, looking at the final statements of inmates just before they are put to death. Brendan Kelly is Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry and Consultant Psychiatrist, Department of Adult Psychiatry in UCD.

    Sister Helen Prejean is a Roman Catholic nun who has spent a large part of her life working on Death Row in the United States. Her book, Dead Man Walking, won her the Pulitzer Prize and was made into an Oscar-winning film, where she was played by Susan Sarandon. It started a conversation in the US and took her to Rome, where she persuaded John Paul II to oppose capital punishment.  She has since ministered to many other inmates on death row and witnessed several more executions.
