    GSOC Bugging Controversy

The inquiry by former High Court judge John Cooke has found no evidence that the Garda Ombudsman’s office was bugged or that the Gardai were involved.  The report investigated three possible breaches of security – ruled out two but in one case raised a suspicion that a phone in the office was bugged. Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald says there’s now a need for a “new culture” of co-operation between the Ombudsman’s office and the Garda Siochana. Penalty Points

A report into the operation of the penalty points system has recommended that the power to cancel penalty points be taken out of the hands of local Garda officers.  The Garda Inspectorate’s report recommends a stricter system , which would remove the Garda power of discretion to cancel penalty points, for offences such as speeding. Fianna Fail said the report vindicated the two Garda whistleblowers Sgt.Maurice McCabe and former gardaJohn Wilson, who first highlighted the issue. Joining Keelin was Fionnan Sheahan of the Irish Independent and former Garda Ombudsman, Conor Brady.

He also said the commission was investigating the source of a leak which led to details of the security sweep entering the public domain. He said it was highly likely that information has come from documents within GSOC, with less than seven people having access to the documents. Sean spoke with Fianna Fail leader, Micheal Martin and with former Garda Ombudsman, Conor Brady.
