Education minister Ruairi Quinn must often wish that he’d never even heard of SUSI. It’s of course the much heralded online grant applications system which promised so much but has so far delivered very little. So far, only 3,000 students out of 66,000 have received their grants. So where has it all gone wrong and what’s being done to get it back on track? Also in the world of education – we’re approaching the CAO application season for 2013 and career guidance teacher Brian Mooney was with Pat this morning.

Alternative Study Options to the CAO.

The early bird application date for the CAO has now passed and so far nearly 60,000 people both young and old have applied. Over the next few days a further 14,000 applicants will apply paying an additional sum of €15 on top of the €25 which those who applied before the 20th January deadline paid. But there are educational opportunities beyond our own domestic application system. A growing number are exploring degree options available within other EU countries. CAO Applications.

Monday 7th January

Over the next ten days Guidance Counsellors will be working intensely on a one to one basis with their Leaving Certificate students, to help them in finalizing their initial application for a college place in September next, and with the news this morning that they face a further points increase for college courses such as science, technology and other areas seen as offering good job prospects, they will have their work cut out for them.
