    Budget 2013

We’re in final countown mode now until tomorrow at 2.30pm when minister Michael Noonan stands up in the Dail and delivers Budget 2013. The extraordinary level of leaking over the past few days means that the minister’s cough has been significantly softened. Despite numerous ministers expressing their anger last year at the leaking of budget 2012 they haven’t managed to stop the advanced details coming out this time around either. And in effect the Government seems to have done a great job in getting the bad news out there early. But, despite how detailed or well sourced the information is ...

    Debt

With another tough budget bearing down on the country the Government could have done with a sliver of good news. But hopes that there could be an easing of Ireland’s bailout terms similar to last week’s Greek style deal on debt has been ruled out by Germany and France. Portugal was also given a similar message. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble and French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said it would be a mistake for the two countries to demand the lower interest rates and longer repayment times that were granted to Greece . Joining Pat were Fine Gael spokesman Paschal ...

    Budget 2013

After weeks of speculation and an unprecedented series of leaks we’ll finally get to hear the details of Budget 2013 this afternoon. All eyes will no doubt be on the backbench TDs of both parties with particular interest in how labour TDs will react to the cuts and tax hikes. Will the details be enough for some to jump ship or will the fact that it looks like education will be largely protected and that high income pensioners are being hit, be enough to allow the TDs of both parties to say the budget is tough but “fair”. Joining Pat ...

Pieces of the Government’s fiscal jigsaw are being added by the day with more clues emerging in the run up to next week’s Budget. Yesterday details emerged of how the property tax will work with the cost estimated at €350 on an average house, priced at €157,000. Tax on properties priced at €500,000 will come in at around €1,000. The Irish Independent reports today that child benefit will be cut by €10 euro , benefits for the elderly are in the firing line and medical card holders will have to pay more for medicines. Worries about Wednesday's budget

As Budget 2013 looms Councillor Mannix Flynn joined Joe to discuss the stress and fears that people have as we await our fate tomorrow. Mannix says there is a real sense of worry and stress out there. It’s not subject to class or culture. More and more Mannix is coming across middle class people who find themselves foraging as well for resources. There are people dying prematurely as a result of financial stress. A case in point was businessman Hugh O’Regan who died last week. Mannix gave the oration at his funeral. There is massive stress and shame felt by ...
