    Georgian Houses

Last February, as part of the Finance Bill, Government announced a ‘Living City’ pilot project aimed at helping to breathe life back into parts of Georgian Limerick and Waterford. The incentives announced mean that residents can claim tax relief for refurbishment costs of their historic buildings, while there will be similar tax breaks for work carried out on retail units within the designated areas of each city. Brian O’Connell visited Waterford and Limerick in recent weeks to try and find out more about this scheme and he joined Pat this morning.

They were a vital link home for decades, and helped Irish communities outside the republic of Ireland stay in touch with home. Fostering and why the Referendum result will have a huge impact for some foster parents.

There was a strong reaction from the fostering community in the past week when Irish Times columnist John Waters highlighted the financial benefits of fostering as a motivating factor for many would be foster parents. Some took this to mean that they were in it solely for the money. Over the weekend, as the results of the Children’s Referendum was becoming clear, Brian O’Connell travelled from Cork to Mayo and met some foster parents and children for whom the vote could have real significance. People leaving after the Christmas Holidays.

Close to 90,000 persons left Ireland in the year to April 2012, leading some to comment that we are experiencing near Famine levels of emigration. It is estimated that some 200 emigrants per day are leaving these shores and for those who made it home for Christmas, the past few days saw many of our emigrants return to their lives overseas. Brian O’Connell spent time this week in both Shannon and Cork Airports and talked in particular to the families who accompanied their departing loved ones to these airports and he joins us now from Cork.

Christmas shopping with men as they buy for the Special One.

Look closely in jewellery and perfume shops in the next few days and you should notice panicked men, scratching their heads and wondering what to get their significant others as Christmas presents this year. Some will play it safe and opt for a voucher or maybe a cash present, while others will have received clear instructions well in advance of Christmas morning. Brian O’Connell spent some time on the streets of Cork trying to find out what men are buying for their wives and partners this Christmas and he also went shopping with a personal shopper to get some expert ...
