    The conflict in eastern Ukraine has killed nearly 2,600 people since mid-April, the United Nations has said. The figure is included In its latest report, explaining the sharp increase by fighting in densely populated areas between Kiev's army and pro-Russian rebels. The report noted that human rights violations like abductions and torture are "committed primarily by the armed groups" fighting the Ukrainian army. Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama has accused Russia of being responsible for the violence in eastern Ukraine. Sean spoke with Daniel Baer, OSCE Ambassador in Vienna.

    Sean was joined by the Irish Times correspondent in the United States, Simon Carswell who had a shocking story in his Saturday column about how lack of tried and tested drugs being used in executions in American states has raised fears of unnecessary pain at death.  Sean also asked him about President Obama's State of the Union address.

    Tomorrow night President Barack Obama will stand in front of Congress and give his State of the Union address. As candidates for his successor are already being bandied about, this one will probably not have the power or promise or hope of his first speech in 2008, but no doubt it’ll have much to keep people interested.     The crisis in Syria appears to be moving back from the brink after US President Barrack Obama welcomed a Russian proposal for Syria to place its chemical weapons under international control. Opinion polls suggest Americans remain wary of a strike against Syria, though Mr Obama said he would continue to press the US Congress to back a resolution authorising him to take military action against Syria. The BBC’s World Affairs Editor John Simpson is a veteran of Middle East politics and he came into studio to talk to Sean.
