J P Swaine

J P Swaine

J P Swaine has set up a unique festival aimed at starting off the New Year on a positive note. He is a mental health therapist who has set up a unique festival called First Fortnight, Ireland's Mental Health Arts Festival which will host various events across 17 counties nationwide starting on New Year's Day.

He and co founder David Keegan (who is an arts professional) believe arts events "have the capacity to change people's attitudes towards mental health problems...Their primary focus is to reduce the levels of stigma and prejudice associated with mental health issues. They linked it in with the first two weeks of the year as it’s a time that can be really challenging for people who were experiencing any type of mental turmoil. They wanted to start the year with a positive and dynamic message about mental health that engaged people with the issues surrounding it’.

There’s a full programme of events on www.firstfortnight.ie
