GIVING UP THE GHOST
When: Friday 6 April 2007, 2.30pm
Producer: Aidan Mathews
Reflections on Good Friday by Luke Sheehan
The Rule of Saint Benedict famously counsels Christians to listen to the young as a type of the marginalised. Even in a world in which they've become mainstream, it's still sound Biblical practice to audition their point of view; and in 'Giving up the Ghost', a Good Friday reflection before the third hour and the veneration of the Cross at the mid-point of the drama we call the Triduum, Luke Sheehan, fresh from TCD with a first in Theology under the great Galilean expert Professor Sean Freyne, considers the themes of Calvary and the human crisis from a personal perspective.
WOODEN CROSS, HOLY ROOD
When: Friday 6th April 2007, 1.30pm
Producer: Eoin Brady
The cross has been a universal symbol for mankind long before the Crucifixion at Golgotha. Since the death of Christ, this geometrical figure of horizontal and vertical lines became of unique importance to Christians as a triumphant act of faith fused with despair. This programme explores the use of crucifixion as a means of punishment around the time of Christ and looks outside the bible for stories and myths about the cross upon which Christ was killed.

Broadcast 14th May 2006
A documentary about the power of hymns.
"It's the power of sound and how a sound can bring you back to a memory, to a space in yourself which is above and beyond the here and now." - Noirín Ní Riain
Programme maker Séamus Kelly visits various people for whom the singing of hymns holds great importance. Contributors include Sonny Molloy who first sang at the Augustinian church in Galway as a young boy, began conducting the choir there in 1955 and where he continues to sing and conduct today. Other contributors include the nuns of the Poor Clare Monastery, Nuns' Island, Galway; Rev. Patrick Towers and the choir of St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church, Galway; the Galway Boy Singers and singers Johnny Duhan, Mary McPartlan and Noirín Ní Riain.
The title, "Like Feathers on the Breath of God" is inspired by Hildegard, a twelfth-century Benedictine Abbess whom Ní Riain quotes in the programme. While for many listeners hymns such as "Soul of my Saviour" will forever evoke a bygone era in Ireland of Corpus Christi processions, Sodality and Benediction services, the programme also highlights the enduring power of singing as a form of spirituality today.

A documentary on the religious community of Taize presented by Derek Mooney and produced by Mary Curtin.
Taizé, in the south of Burgundy, France, is the home of an international, ecumenical community, founded in 1940 by Brother Roger. When the Second World War started, Br Roger had the conviction that he should begin to offer assistance to people in experiencing difficulties. The small village of Taizé, where he settled, was close to the demarcation line that divided France in half, and so was well situated to be a place of welcome for
refugees fleeing the war.
Today, the community is made up of over a hundred brothers, Catholics and Protestants from various backgrounds. Since the late 1950s, many thousands of young adults from around the world have found their way to Taizé to take part in weekly meetings of prayer and reflection. At the heart of daily life in Taizé is communal prayer, three times a day. It was during
the evening prayer on Tuesday 16 August 2005, in the midst of the crowd surrounding the Community in the Church of Reconciliation, that a woman struck Brother Roger violently with a knife. He died a few moments later.
In this documentary, first broadcast in January 1992, Derek Mooney travelled to France to meet Br Roger and share in the unique experience that is TAIZE.
First broadcast 3rd January, 1992.
