The Irish Voice, under the stewardship of editor Niall O’Dowd, has been a strong voice and advocate for the Irish in America for a quarter of a century. O’Dowd (who also publishes Irish America Magazine) is now focusing more on his online product,irishcentral.com, than on his printed offerings. In this episode, we drop in on the Irish Voice's 25th anniversary celebrations in New York and talk to emigrants for whom the paper meant a lot in the 1980s and 1990s. We meet with some hardline Irish republicans who feel the newspaper has abandoned them, hear from one Irish person on the run for over two decades, and speak with Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times journalist Jim Dwyer.

The Irish Post prided itself as the voice of the Irish in Britain for decades. Crisis hit the newspaper when it went off the shelves over a year ago for financial reasons. However, businessman Elgin Loane stepped in and saved the day. Within months of returning, under new editor Murray Morse, the newspaper was accused of insulting President Michael D.Higgins. We revisit that controversy and hear how the paper, like others, may struggle to connect with a new generation of Irish in Britain and we also examine the important role the newspaper played in forming Irish identity in the UK. Notable interviewees include the owner, editor and staff of the Irish Post, ex-London Lord Mayor Ken Livingstone, singer Damien Dempsey (who recorded a song for the programme), Sally Mulready and some members of the London Irish Pensioners Choir.

The first programme of the series begins in Belfast with the Irish News, a newspaper traditionally seen as having a mainly nationalist readership. It has now gained a level of cross community appeal and we hear how some Loyalist communities are beginning to engage in a different way with the Irish News. Ex-UDA member Frankie Gallagher tells us how during the Troubles paramilitaries used newspapers as a means of gathering intelligence. We hear the views of republicans such as Danny Morrison, who feels the Irish News was too pro-British. Along the way, we'll also hear first hand from seasoned journalists how news reporting has changed in Northern Ireland since the Troubles
