Thomas Davis Lectures / The Great Debate

'Welcome to RTÉ Radio 1's Our War project, a stream of radio programmes including lectures and public debates. The idea for the project came during the course of a conversation with Professor John Horne of Trinity College Dublin who brought to my mind the number of Irish men who served and died during World War I. It seemed to me appropriate that we should mark this major contribution by Irish soldiers on the 90th anniversary of Armistice and from that point the project started to evolve.

I hope that you will enjoy listening and that the programmes will reveal to you, as they have to me, the significance of Ireland's participation in the Great War'.

Our War: The Great Debate

On the 90th anniversary of the end of the Great war and as part of RTÉ Radio 1's Our War project reflecting the experience of ordinary Irish people during the war and the effect the war had and continues to have on Irish society there will be three public debates in front of an invited audience examining the Morality, Memory and Legacy of the Great War. The final public debate will be a live webchat asking 'Is it Our War?' It will be broadcast live here on Thursday, 4 December. Check back here for further details.

Thomas Davis Lecture Series - Ireland and the Great War

A ten-part Thomas Davis lecture series marking the 90th anniversary of the end of the Great War, reflecting the experience of ordinary Irish people during the war and the effect this war had then and has now on Irish society.

RTÉ Radio 1, each Monday at 10.02pm from 10 November.

RTÉ Radio 1 is broadcasting a wide selection of World War I to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Armistice or the laying down of arms.
