The prestigious annual Rose D'Or Awards (now in their 55th year) honour the very best of international radio, TV and online entertainment programmes, and they will take place later this year.  Over 400 programmes from more than 130 broadcasters and production companies in 33 different countries were submitted for this year’s Rose d’Or awards.  For the first time, a new competition category, 'Radio Event Of The Year' was created.  We entered European Dawn Chorus in this category, and we're absolutely delighted to let you know that we're one of the final nominees!!  And another programme from the Mooney team, called A Very Merry Mooney Tunes, has been shortlisted in the Radio - Music Show category! Click here to read more about the 2016 Rose D'Or Finalists, and click here to relive - and re-listen to - all the beautiful Dawn Chorus birdsong from right across Europe.

We chat about the Rose Of Tralee contest, hear how estate agents, car dealers and other businesses cope with "tyrekickers" - browsers who have little intention of buying, and find out about plans to have more €5 notes in ATM machines...

Do you know what a tyre kicker is? If you said it's someone who goes into a shop just to have a look around but has absolutely no intention of buying anything, you'd be right! In fact defines a tyre kicker as: "Someone who is indecisive about purchasing a product or service, and never feels satisfied with what they are offered".

The website goes on to say: "The term comes from sales people at car dealerships. Tyre kickers would come around frequently, kick the tyres a few times on the cars that they liked, but never make a solid purchasing decision on any particular car or trim".

Pat O'Mahony heads out to chat to car dealers and estate agents who know a thing or two about tyrekickers, and from the Radio Kerry studio by well-known publican Billy Keane, who says that he's been irritated by tyrekickers...

Moving Towards A Cashless Society

"That clinking clanking sound sure can make the world go around" ... but what will happen if the coins in your pocket disappear? Will the world stop spinning? That’s not part of the plan! And there is a financial plan for our future, called the National Payments Plan.

The National Payments Plan is a Government initiative which aims to save the country €1bn a year by encouraging us to switch from cash and cheques to electronic payment systems such as debit cards and e-payments.

Ronnie O’Toole is Programme Manager of the National Payments Plan, and he joins us in studio to explain more...
