Derek Mooney with his unique mix of conversation, information, advice and entertainment

    On Mooney today...

A 17-year-old dating a 46-year-old? A 39-year-old dating a 75-year-old? Where do you think the line should be drawn in terms of relationships among different age groups? Can reading to your pets or farmyard animals help them to sleep better? And we meet a woman in North County Dublin who's had a Christmas tree in her house for the last twenty years...

    Age Gap Couples

A lot of female hearts were broken last month when Hollywood heart-throb George Clooney got engaged. Let's face it, he's tried quite a few potential partners since rising to fame as Dr Doug in the hit drama series, ER.  But now, it seems, somebody has finally prised a diamond ring out of gorgeous George once more!

She is Amal Alamuddin, a Lebanese-born human rights lawyer. She is 36 years old. And he's 52 - a sixteen-year age gap.

In Hollywood terms, we probably see bigger age gaps all the time. But in the "real world" it's a little different - huge age differences are a rarity, aren't they? Well, maybe not as rare as you think!

Last year, a great-grandmother from North Wales, 68-year-old Joan Lloyd, met 29-year-old Phil Absolom, and what resulted was nothing less than a bolt of lightning!

    Joan Lloyd and Phil Absolom

Phil and Joan are one of five couples featured in a recent Channel 5 documentary entitled She's 78. He's 39: Age Gap Love. (That title actually refers to another couple). And for more information about that documentary, we're joined on the line from Manchester by the producer of the documentary, Colin Stone, from TV production company Nine Lives Media.

This morning, we asked reporter Brenda Donohue to go out and see what members of the public thought of large age gaps in relationships. What's your view? If you have your own opinions on relationships that feature large age gaps, please text us on 51551 whilst the show is on air, tweet @MooneyShow or e-mail mooney@rte.ie.

Colin contacted Mooney because he is looking to get in touch with couples living in Ireland who have a large age gap between them!

Seeking Age Gap Couples For A New Television Series:

    • Are you in an age gap relationship?
    • Are there 20, 30, or even 40 years separating you and your partner?
    • Are you living proof that age is no barrier to finding true love?

Following the hit Channel 5 documentary She’s 78, He’s 39: Age Gap Love, Nine Lives Media is now looking for couples to appear in a new series. For more information, please contact David Kavanagh at Nine Lives Media – david.kavanagh@ninelivesmedia.co.uk or call 0044 161 832-2007.

The series will air in October.

    Getting A Pig To Sleep

Yesterday you might remember, we had our Quiz. And Player Number One, Samantha Staunton from Castlebar, happened to mention that her family received a 'new addition' last week - a Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pig.

Derek gave her a great tip that applies to *anyone* who owns a pig – to get a pig to sleep, read it a bedtime story! After yesterday's show, our Katriona rang Samantha to see if she was really going to tell her pig a bedtime story last night. Samantha didn't believe Derek's hypothesis, but she agreed to give it a go, as an experiment. And she agreed to video Wiggles the Pig as she put her down to bed and told her a bedtime story:

This morning, Katriona went to visit vet Pete Wedderburn in BrayVet to see what he thinks of Derek's suggestion - and to chat about the different ways in which we can communicate with our pets...

Can you believe it? It's time for Mooney Tunes again, and astonishingly, we are approaching our tenth concert! It all started in September 2009, at the National Concert Hall. The very first Mooney Tunes featured music such as Send In The ClownsThe Anvil Chorus and even the theme from Hawaii Five-O. Over the last nine concerts, there hasn't been any genre of music we haven't covered. We've done a lot of classical favourites, we've had arias and choruses from some of the greatest operas ever written.

Tickets to Mooney Tunes 10 range from €10 to €39.50, and can be booked in person at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin (no booking fee), or by calling Ticketmaster on 0818 719 377 (booking fee applies). Mooney Tunes 10 will be a 'Best Of' the music and songs from previous Mooney Tunes concerts.

    Hedgerows and the Law

Hedgerows in Ireland form important features in maintaining wildlife diversity and in establishing wildlife "corridors", particularly for birds. The commonest nesting birds found in hedgerows such as wrens, dunnocks, robin and willow warblers depend entirely on insects during the Summer months. In general untrimmed, thorned hedgerows containing species such as blackthorn, whitethorn and holly are favoured by birds as they provide ample food and also serve as a protection against predators.

Section 40 of the Wildlife Act, 1976, as amended by Section 46 of the 2000 Act, provides protection for hedgerows by providing that it shall be an offence for a person to cut, grub, burn or otherwise destroy hedgerows on uncultivated land during the nesting season from 1 March to 31 August, subject to certain exceptions. It is important that, where possible, necessary work to hedgerows is carried out outside this period.

It is possible in most cases to schedule and carry out necessary work to hedgerows outside this period. The legislation makes provision for works (other than road or other construction works) to be carried out for reasons of public health and safety under the authority of any Minister or a body established by statute that lead to the destruction of vegetation. There is also a provision to enable the Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government to request from the relevant Minister or body details of any such works together with a statement of the public health and safety factors involved.

It shall not be an offence to destroy vegetation in the ordinary course of agriculture or forestry. Also it shall not be illegal to destroy vegetation while preparing or clearing a site for lawful building or construction works.

It is the policy of the Minister to prosecute for offences under section 40 of the Wildlife Acts 1976 and 2000 and successful prosecutions have been taken under this section in recent years. Members of the public are encouraged to contact their local wildlife ranger and report instances where hedgerows are being destroyed during the prohibited period.
