Parisian Smog

Parisian Smog

We were all bit fans of Paris in the Springtime last Saturday! But while our boys in Green were doing us proud on the rugby pitch, the City of Light had become the city of SMOG...

Last Friday, Paris' air quality index rose to 185, higher than the world’s most notoriously polluted cities - including Beijing! The authorities introduced a range of emergency measures to deal with the problem, including - for the first time in 20 years - a partial driving ban in the French capital on Monday.

Earlier today, our reporter Katriona McFadden spoke to Professor of the Geography department in NUI Maynooth, John Sweeney, to find out a bit more about smog and air quality in Ireland...

We're joined in studio by Michael Sheridan, Motoring Correspondent with RTÉ Online, to try and find out how common it is that motoring restrictions are introduced around the world when high levels of pollution are present in the atmosphere... and we're also joined from Paris by Siobhan Silke, journalist with France 24...

The documentary that Derek mentioned is called Inside Rolls-Royce and Boodles and is on Channel 4 tomorrow night at 9pm. For more information, visit

A Loo With A View

We often tell you that you can 'contact us about anything at all' - and you do! You tell us about the wildlife you’ve seen, sometimes you tell us how great we are, sometimes you tell us how terrible we are – whatever it is, we LOVE to hear your thoughts.

But we must admit, we REALLY like it when an e-mail is a little 'unusual', or 'queer'! Like Grania Glancy’s!

A couple of weeks ago Derek was on holidays, and Shay Byrne was in the hotseat. He wondered out loud if anyone in Ireland had clear glass in their bathroom.

And Grania texted in to say: "yes, I have a 'loo with a view' – and yes, people can look in!"

So our Katriona McFadden rang her - and Grania said 'come on down to Ballymore Eustace, and I’ll show you my loo with a view…' - we hear today how she got on!
