From June 10th to July 12th, you can follow a live show from a bird cliff on an island called Hornøya, in the distant north-east of Norway. About 100,000 sea birds are nesting in the steep mountainside at Hornøya, near Vardø in Finnmark.
It's day one of Cheltenham, and Derek is joined by horse racing reporter, Michael Fortune, to study the form ahead of today's big race, the Champion hurdle. Brenda Donohue gets her dancing shoes on and discovers social jiving, the new dance craze arising from the growing popularity of modern country music. And ornithologist Eric Dempsey talks about what YOU can do to help your local birdlife flourish this spring!
We'll be keeping an eye on all today's racing action from Cheltenham, in the company of RTÉ Racing's Michael Fortune and Barry Orr from Betfair. Tony Hehir will provide commentary on the 15:20 Stan James Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy (Grade 1), and the 1600 OLBG Mares' Hurdle (Grade 2). For more information on RTÉ's coverage of the Cheltenham Festival, visit www.rte.ie/sport/racing.

Listeners of a certain vintage will recognise that music – it is of course the theme tune that accompanied Gay Byrne’s radio programme which ran on RTÉ Radio 1 from 1972 to 1999 – first as the Gay Byrne Hour and subsequently as The Gay Byrne Show.
He is – without a doubt – a legend amongst broadcasters – and still has a jazz programme on RTÉ lyric fm on Sundays (Sunday With Gay Byrne).
Gay was due to play the Íontas Centre, Castleblayney tomorrow Wednesday 12th and The Ramor Theatre, Virginia, Thursday 13th.
Both dates are sold-out but – we’re very sorry to hear that Gaybo is ill with a ferocious cold and because of that he will not be able to perform on those dates.
The good news is that organisers have managed to move both shows to new dates and Gay Byrne will now appear at the Íontas Centre, Castleblayney on Wednesday, April 23rd, and the Ramor Theatre, Virginia on Thursday, April 24th.
So if you know anyone who has tickets for these events please let them know so they can make arrangements – and from all of us here on Mooney, we wish Gaybo the very best for a speedy recovery!
Spring has sprung! The daffodils are out. The evenings are getting longer. Met Eireann say we’re going to have this mild, dry weather for the next few days with – shock horror – even a little sunshine! So what does this mean for our birds? Ornithologist Eric Dempsey, from the Birds of Ireland News Service (BINS) is studio with us to explain...
ERIC’S TIPS FOR SPRING
- Clean out existing nestboxes NOW! - If you are erecting a new nestbox, make sure it is facing North or North East. Birds won’t occupy a South-facing nestbox as it’s too warm for them. - Reduce the number of feeders in your garden. You don’t have to remove them altogether. - If you have a problem with birds attacking windows or mirrors, it’s because it’s mating season. Young males are defending their territories and are fighting their reflections, thinking they are rival males. Try to cover up the reflection for the next few weeks.
Spring Migrant Workshop
Eric will be hosting a Spring Migrant workshop next month. It's on April 12th from 9.30am-5.00pm in Sycamore Hill near Newcastle in Wicklow. It will start with an indoor workshop on how migrants get here, how they deal with the weather etc. Then there is lunch and then there is a field trip to the Wicklow Coast to look for migrants like Wheat Ears, Swallows, Sand Martins and Warblers. Full details on www.birdsireland.com. Cost is €75 To book a place e-mail Eric at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
