Miriam meets... Pat McCabe and Padraic McIntyre

This week Miriam O'Callaghan meets writer Pat Mc Cabe and theatre director Padraic Mc Intyre. Padraic is currently directing Pat's latest play The Bridge Below The Town for Livin' Dred Theatre Company.

They recall how they met and worked on a critically acclaimed production of Pat's play The Dead School, an adaptation Pat's critically acclaimed novel of the same name.

They describe their working relationship - the challenge for Padraic of bringing Pat's stage directions to life and Pat's experience of collaborating with actors in contrast to the lonelier life of fiction writer.

Padraic wrote a very popular play called The Night Joe Dolan's Car Broke Down. He describes the valuable advice given to him by Pat who said that you don't need to know how a play or a book will end before you start to write it!

Both men describe their childhood and how in Pat's case, he became a writer and in Padraic's case, he got involved in theatre. Both men lived in London and both now live back home.

They discuss some of the themes of the play, including religious faith. Pat reflects on his life's work so far. He remains discontented with his work but both men agree that discontent prevents you from becoming complacent.

The Bridge Below the Town tours the midlands for two weeks.

They chose Bridie Gallagher's Johnny Dear; Mick Flannery's Ships in the Night and Peggy Lee's Is That All There Is?
