Berlin & Volunteering Holidays
Volunteering Abroad
- A wide range of organisations offer travellers the chance to volunteer for all manner of projects abroad, from short breaks to three or six month long commitments. You can do anything from working with rehabilitated chimps in Kenya to taking part in an archaeological dig in Anatolia, Turkey or helping the National Trust restore historic gardens in Somerset.
- Many organisations will expect you to pay for your own flights and make a - usually small - contribution to accommodation and food. However, by volunteering to work, you will be able to stay for quite long periods for relatively little money and fully immerse yourself in a different culture while making a contribution.
- A good place to start in Ireland is with EIL Intellectual Learning (www.eilireland.org) an Irish NGO that offers intercultural learning opportunities through study abroad, volunteer abroad, language training and other cultural immersion activities for about 2,000 people each year.
- Projects include working with disadvantaged children in Mexico and in community development projects in schools in Nepal. The programmes last from two to 24 weeks and you are expected to make a financial contribution.
- Also, check out www.nationaltrust.org.uk for details on a wide range of volunteering holidays.
Berlin
- The ArtHotel chain which has four, four-star hotels around Berlin city centre and offer good rates and great breakfasts (B&B for three weekend nights at the end of March will cost you around €320 for a room for two).
- Flights - Aer Lingus, Ryanair, Lufthansa all fly daily from Dublin to Berlin
