Travel - Rome

Saturday 10th March 2007
Silvia Bertoni, a Roman lady living in Dublin and Paddy Agnew, Rome-based correspondent for the Irish Times gave some tips for restaurants in Rome that are well worth a visit -
Antico Forno Roscioli. 21, Via dei Giubbonari www.anticofornoroscioli.com (Near the Campo dei Fiori)
This has been a bakery and a food shop/ delicatessen for years. Not the cliched idea of Italian food - no lasagne, and no carbonara but lovely fish
Filetti di Baccala, 88 Largo dei Librari (off Off Via dei Giubbonari)
The closest you will get in Italy to the Italian fish and chip shops you find all over Ireland. A real tradition for lots of Romans, and basically consists of a fish bar with paper tablecloths, basic food, and cheap prices. Also does some local specialities like fried courgette flowers.
Osteria dell' Ingegno 45, Piazza Di Pietra.
If you are looking for something a bit more upmarket. The kind of place where you get to eat like the Italians eat.
Al Pompiere. 38, Via Santa Maria di Calderari. Ghetto
A big favourite amongst the political classes. It is located in the old Ghetto area and specialises in Roman Jewish cuisine
Nerone. 96, Via Terme Tito.
Looks onto the Coliseum & very good Italian food.
La Sagrestia. 89, Via del Seminario.
50m from the Pantheon, a typical upmarket Italian restaurant with classic Roman food
For great ice cream
Giolitti, 40 via Uffici del Vicario
Da Quinto, 15 Via di Tor Millina
Traditional trattoria/cafés
Antico Caffé della Pace, Via di Tor Millina
La Carbonara, 214 Via Panisperna
Wine bars
Cavour 313 on Via Cavour - a famous wine bar near the Coliseum
L'angolo Divino 12 Via de' Ballestrari - Very nice old-fashioned wine bar. Does a good selection of foods too
