How to get Teenagers Interested in Reading

Robert Dunbar talks to Marian about how to get teenagers interested in reading -

The three books which Robert has chosen are:

JANE, THE FOX AND ME BY FANNY BRITT AND ISABELLE ARSENAULT (WALKER BOOKS)

An excellent example of the graphic novel, from Canada: the story of a girl on the edge of adolescence, initially unpopular at school but finding through reading a way of handling the situation: striking artwork throughout, providing its own strong visual dimension to the novel. (There is considerable research indicating that for some ‘reluctant’ readers the graphic novel can be a useful way in to reading full-prose texts).

WHY WE TOOK THE CAR BY WOLFGANG HERRNDORF (ANDERSEN PRESS)

Translated from the original German, this is an exciting story of two young teenage boys and a road trip they make in a ‘borrowed’ car across Europe, starting in their native Berlin: the wonderfully weird characters they meet on the way provide the material for a really entertaining read but it is the depiction of the growing relationship between the boys that is really at the heart of the story.

PRIMPERFECT BY DEIRDRE SULLIVAN (LITTLE ISLAND)

Set in today’s Ireland and featuring a group of friends who have just finished their Junior Certificate and now have a summer to spend, coping with their various adolescent concerns and, in particular, their discovery of the significance of relationships, social and sexual: written with a great sense of humour but also with tremendous insight into what it is to be an Irish teenager in 2014.
