    Podcasts - Edel Coffey

Journalist and broadcaster Edel Coffey talks about the rich selection of podcast content available.

How to find podcasts using your smart phone

To listen to podcasts on your smart phone you need a podcasting app.

A lot of shows that have podcasts will have their own individual apps but it is easier to use a podcast app where you can subscribe to a podcast and have it automatically upload new episodes of your favourite podcasts all in the one place.

A lot of these podcasts can be downloaded or streamed on the show's homepage so you don't even need a smart phone or tablet to listen to them - you can listen to them on your web browser if you so wish. It's just a little easier to do it on your smart phone.

There are endless radio apps and podcast apps out there that offer access to the best shows in the world. An internet radio app is essentially turning your smart phone into an internet radio.

    1. TuneIn Radio (for iPhone and Android)

You can listen to over 70,000 stations from all over the world. It has a category function so that you can find shows you're interested in or music or sports you're interested in. You can have your list of favourite stations. Maybe you like to listen to ESPN sport and Triple J music in Australia. It also has a 'local radio' tab so using GPS it finds your local stations.

    2. Last.FM

This is a popular music radio app that lets you find out more about your favourite artists, listen to music, share your music with friends, find nearby events and radio, and it also lets you build a 'genius' style playlist.

    3.Stitcher

This is one of the more general ones where you can listen to comedy, news, sport, talk radio, etc. From NPR to the BBC, it has over 10,000 stations to choose from.

Every radio station you listen to has its own app and then every radio has a player. So for RTE you can download the player and you can download the RTE Radio 1 app or the 2FM one if you prefer. Or both.

You'll find all of these apps in your smart phones app store.
