The presenter of RTÉ Radio 1's News at One programme, Seán O'Rourke, is to replace Pat Kenny as the presenter of the station's mid-morning programme between 10am and noon. Seán has been the presenter of News at One since January 1995 and of The Week in Politics since 2003.

“It’s 40 years ago next month since I began a lifelong love affair with journalism and I can honestly say I am as excited about this move as I was the first day I climbed the stairs in the Connacht Tribune in September 1973."

Angela Scanlon started something of a meteoric rise earlier this year when British Vogue tipped her as one to watch for 2013.

Not only did she receive this great compliment from the UK’s biggest Style Bible but she was also chosen to model Louis Vuitton’s latest handbag range.  She is a presenter, a writer and stylist.

Next week she will be giving a talk at the Kilkenny Arts Festival called ‘What Irish Style Means’. She will be writing some lifestyle articles for the Gloss magazine. Her next project will be about 30 Days of Being a Vegan.

She will host the main stage during London Fashion Week for the first time at the end of September.

She is currently involved in the judging panel of the arts section of the Arthur Guinness Project (along with Chris O’Dowd and Dylan McGrath) where AGP aims to give out E3 million over the next three years to people seeking to fund various projects. Other people from sports and music are involved. It’s all about creative ideas.

Marie returned to Ireland for a holiday after emigrating 47 years ago. She has been blinded in one eye after she was hit by a glass bottle. She spoke to Aine about her ordeal.

She had no involvement in the fracas, but she was struck in the face by a glass bottle, resulting in her sustaining the grievous injuries to her eye. She will now need to have her right eye surgically removed as it has been damaged beyond repair after the glassing.

Ms Gauvin and her three siblings were all born in Ireland and left Birr in 1966 when their father Frank Wrafter, a talented weaver, went to Canada for work. But last weekend she was enjoying being back home, along with her 84-year-old father and sister Irene (53).

Ms Gauvin had accompanied her father earlier in the evening as he acted as the Grand Marshall of the Birr Vintage Week and Arts Festival parade.

We all know that it’s extremely difficult to meet a potential partner and in the last decade or so it’s become really normal to go to the internet to meet someone. Two amazing stories from two women who met frauds on line. 

They and many women became entwined in a tangled web of deception.  Claire Travers Smith dated a man who was really a woman, while Mary Turner Thomson married a bigamist, conman and sex offender who all the while pretended he was working for the CIA.

Willlie Penrose has lost 7 stone 3 lbs since October 1 last year, and only has 1 stone and 4lbs more to go before he reaches his own weight loss goal. The Labour deputy hasn’t eaten a slice of bread since that date! His health was beginning to suffer over the last four years. There are a number of reasons for that including prostate cancer and hip replacement.  He has had a constant battle with his weight since he stopped playing sport. 

When he became a TD, Family life, leisure time and recreational pursuits all take so much time so health is relegated to second or third place.  A warning from his doctor last September brought his weight issues to a head and he took up a diet programme called Motivation.

This is a frantic time of the year for farmers as they gather fodder for the winter but there's one farmer down in Co Carlow who, on half an acre of land, is gearing up for an unusual harvesting this September and that is Eva Milka  who came to Ireland 5 years ago from Poland and is now farming snails by the tonne in a field in Garryhill, Co Carlow.

WARM FRESH MACKEREL, CHERRY TOMATO, GREEN BEANS, RED ONION SALAD

SERVES 4

4 Smoked Mackerel Fillets

100G Cherry Tomatoes

100G Cooked Green Beans

1 red onion, finely sliced

150ML Rapeseed Oil

50ML red wine vinegar

1 tbsp French mustard

1 tbsp caster sugar

Sea Salt

Cracked black pepper

To make the vinegarette, place the mustard, vinegar and sugar in a bowl. Whisk together and slowly add the oil. Season with salt and pepper and set aside. Cut the cherry tomatoes in half, place in a bowl, add the cooked green beans, sliced red onion and toss together. Warm the smoked mackerel fillets under the grill for 4-5 minutes. Place the salad on a plate topped with the warm smoked mackerel fillets and drizzle the red wine vinegarette on top. This makes a great lunchtime snack.

SUNSHINE HAKE

Hake, 170g per person skinned and boned

1 medium cooked potato – peeled and chopped

6 pitted black olives

4 sundried cherry tomatoes

8 cooked green beans

½ clove of garlic

30mls of olive oil

Sprig of fresh thyme

Pinch of salt

Cracked black pepper

Squeeze of lemon

Season Hake with salt. Heat frying pan, add olive oil. Place the Hake in the pan and cook for 4 minutes on each side. Remove and keep warm. In the same pan fry the potatoes for 3-4 minutes. Add garlic, black olives and cherry tomatoes. Add the cooked green beans and fresh thyme. Season with salt, black pepper and lemon juice. Place on a plate with the hake, here comes the summer.

LINE CAUGHT MACKEREL

Line caught mackerel, pickled white cabbage salad

1 medium white cabbage, shredded

½ cup of sugar

½ cup of water

¾ cup of white vinegar or ¾ cup apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon sea salt

1 tbsp of caraway seeds

Method

Shred or slice the cabbage as fine as possible. Mix all the ingredients together with the cabbage. This can be made a day in advance and stored in the fridge.

Then simply pan fry the mackerel and served this with the white cabbage salad.
