Pauline’s brother was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma four years ago. He received treatment and was on Interferon, unfortunately 18 months ago the cancer returned. He has been told his only hope is to get treatment with Ipilimumab (IPPY). He changed insurers two years ago and unfortunately his new insurer doesn’t cover IPPY. According to Aviva they consult with the National Centre for Pharmaeconomics - the drug is assessed on both its clinical and cost effectiveness. The NCPE advised them against covering the drug at the price quoted by the drug company If he had stayed with his old insurer (VHI) he would have been covered and if he was a public patient in the Mater Public hospital then the treatment would have been covered via NCCP.
John was listening to the discussion on yesterday’s show about the Garda Reserves. He applied to become a Garda – out of 25000 he came in top 500. Was on a waiting list for 5 years. His life was on hold, always wanted to be a Garda. He had done all the testing, aptitude, medical, physical, screening. Devastated when he got the letter saying the list had been scrapped.
