Mary Lawlor met Sr. Hildegarde in Sean Ross Abbey in 1993.   She recalls a frail old nun who was as sharp as a tack.    She had gone to the Abbey to get information about her adoption.     It was very difficult to get any information.      My birth mother is still alive but she doesn’t want to meet me.

Mark Was also born in Sean Ross Abbey in 1962 and was adopted within his own family.    He grew up not knowing that his adoptive mother was actually his aunt.    His real mother had gone to England to work.     He did make contact with his birth mother many years later.   They had a fairly good relationship.     He says he had a wonderful relationship growing up with his adoptive parents, so to him they will always be his parents.

Catherine Bulbulia was involved in the family placement scheme called ALLY, which was started in the early seventies by Father Fergal O’Connor.     She says it was started as an alternative to the regimes of the mother and baby homes.     She remembers some of the women who stayed with her.   She would also attend the birth with them as they would have no family around them.
