Working conditions for junior doctors

Working conditions for junior doctors

Margaret's sister is a Senior House Officer in a hospital and over the past two weeks she has worked a 36-hour shift and 6 night shifts. Dr Anthony O'Connor who wrote about the stresses on Junior Doctors in "The Medical Independent" tells Joe he understands the pressures they are under as he had his own problems with work-related depression. You can access that article at Medical Independent

Newlywed Gaz works as a Junior Doctor in Limerick while his wife works in Dublin. He tells Joe they hardly see each other and on one occasion when he was driving to see his wife he was so tired he had to stop the car and sleep for a few hours. Ann tells Joe she was working 89-hour shifts as a registrar when she was 7-months pregnant. Mary is a junior doctor and says nobody can think straight after a 36-hour shift. She tells Joe she worked with one of the young junior doctors who took her own life before Christmas. Other callers join the discussion.
