Discussion and debate with Joe Duffy

Qualifying for the HPAT exam

Qualifying for the HPAT exam

Debbie Ingram-Walpole's daughter Shannon is studying in Dubai through the International Baccalaureat (IB) system. She wants to study medicine in Trinity or the Royal College of Surgeons. As she's classed as an EU student she must sit the HPAT exam for any medical college at the beginning of next March. Debbie says as this clashes with her important mock exams in Dubai her daughter is faced with studying medicine in another country or reapplying for the HPAT in 2014. She asks the listeners for advice.

The HSE Graduate Nurse Recruitment Scheme

The HSE Graduate Nurse Recruitment Scheme

Christopher and Claire are both nurses who are very disappointed that graduate nurses are being offered contracts of 80% of the pay of staff nurses for a new 2 year contract. This will see them start on a salary of €22,000. Ciara tells Joe she is a Speech and Language Therapist and would be delighted to get a job in her field with those conditions. Ellen is a midwife and got a memorandum from the HSE that she can't continue with her contract. As a result she must leave her position in March and can reapply for it under the new conditions. Ellen tells Joe she will not apply for the new nursing jobs. Fionnuala and her husband are both professionals who have been made redundant. She tells nurses that 80% of their salary is better than being on the dole. Other callers debate whether or not nurses should accept the new contracts.
